TRANSPLACENTAL INFLUENCE OF ANDROGEN UPON OVULATORY MECHANISMS IN THE RAT

W. N. ADAMS SMITH

Swanson & van der Werff ten Bosch (1965) have reported that the female rat foetus is susceptible to the masculinizing influence of testosterone propionate (TP) given in large doses (10–25 mg) to the pregnant doe 1–4 days before parturition, although 2·5 mg TP given at this time did not influence ovulatory mechanisms in the young (Swanson & van der Werff ten Bosch, 1964). This paper reports a study of the possibility that much smaller doses of TP (1·5–2·0 mg), given earlier in the gestation period, have a delayed 'masculinizing' influence.

Pregnant rats of an inbred strain were injected s.c. with 1·5 or 2·0 mg TP (Oreton, supplied by courtesy of Schering Drug Company) on the 17th day of gestation. Female young with a patent vaginal orifice at sexual maturity had a daily vaginal smear taken by lavage and stained with Wright's stain. At 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of
