Prolactin is involved in the control of the oestrous cycle (e.g. rat, Evans, Simpson, Lyons & Turpeinen, 1941; and sheep, Denamur, Martinet & Short, 1973) and probably of the menstrual cycle (McNatty, Sawers & McNeilly, 1974). The present communication describes the changes in the plasma prolactin level during the ovulatory cycle of the chicken.
Twenty-four laying White Leghorn hens, maintained on a lighting schedule of 14 h light: 10 h darkness, were bled by venipuncture from the brachial vein at intervals of 2h.
