About 0·01% of adult rat liver cells are in the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. The proliferation of liver cells increases after either partial hepatectomy or adrenalectomy suggesting that corticosterone may regulate liver cell proliferation in adult rats and act as an autosynchronizer during regeneration (Desser-Wiest, 1975). During pregnancy, the weight of the liver and the number of mitoses are increased, and DNA, RNA and protein content and the activity of ornithine decarboxylase are all raised (Campbell, Fell & Mackie, 1974). Moreover, the liver of pregnant rats regenerates after partial hepatectomy more quickly than normal liver (Gershbein, 1958). The present report describes increased liver cell proliferation during pregnancy under the influence of progesterone and corticosterone.
