THE REFEREEING SYSTEM IN THE JOURNAL OF ENDOCRINOLOGY

Although there is continuing debate over the usefulness or validity of the refereeing process used in the sifting of scientific papers for publication, much discussion is marked more by the expression of opinion than by analysis of fact. Hence the suggestion made in a Nature Editorial (1975) that journals should publish an account of their editorial policy and experience. Accordingly, we present a description of the procedure used in the processing of papers for possible publication in the Journal of Endocrinology, and an analysis of some observations collected upon a review of files closed over a representative year.

During the period under detailed study (1975/76), 110 (38%) out of 293 full papers were submitted from U.K. addresses and 183 (62%) from elsewhere. Over 1976/77 the comparable figures were 37% and 63% respectively. Short communications were submitted in a similar proportion: 36 (31%) from the U.K. and 82 (69%) from overseas,
