PARALLEL CHANGES IN THE PLASMA CONCENTRATION OF FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE AND PITUITARY 5{alpha}-DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE FORMATION AFTER CRYPTORCHIDECTOMY IN THE RAT

It has been shown that fluctuations in the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which occur under a variety of physiological and experimental conditions in vivo and are not dependent on the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), are closely paralleled by fluctuations in the rate of conversion of testosterone to 5{alpha}-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by intact pituitary tissue in vitro (Denef, Magnus & McEwen, 1973, 1974). This suggests that the rate of formation of DHT by the pituitary gland increases when certain independent regulatory mechanisms controlling the release of FSH are activated. Non-parallel changes in the plasma concentrations of FSH and LH in the rat have also been observed after bilateral cryptorchidectomy (Swerdloff, Walsh, Jacobs & Odell, 1971; Gupta, Rager, Zarzycki & Eichner, 1975; Hall & Gomes, 1975; Gomes & Jain, 1976; Ojeda, Jameson & McCann, 1976).
