POSSIBLE NEONATAL IMPRINTING OF LUTEINIZING HORMONE FEEDBACK BY TESTOSTERONE IN MALE RATS

The results described by Naftolin, Ryan, Davies, Reddy, Flores, Petro, White, Takaoka & Wolin (1975) and Moguilevsky, Scacchi & Rubinstein (1977) indicate that the aromatization of androgens to oestrogens during the neonatal period provides a probable route of action for the testicular androgens. It is also thought that during this critical period, the conversion of androgens to oestrogens is involved in regulation of the hepatic and adrenal enzymes that metabolize steroid hormones (De Moor, Verhoeven & Heyns, 1973; Goldman, Gustafsson & Stenberg, 1974; Gustafsson & Stenberg, 1974). There is considerable evidence that androgens inhibit the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) when administered to immature and mature male rats immediately after castration (Mahesh, Muldoon, Eldridge & Korach, 1975; Moger, 1976; Shin & Howitt, 1976).
